KNOW THE RULES. Whether you are new to golf or an expert, everyone should know the rules associated with golf etiquette, scoring properly so you are not cheating, and club guidelines.
DRESS CODE. Most clubs have a dress code. Be sure to adhere to this and other rules of the club.
BE ON TIME. Being on time is imperative so you do not slow down your group or other groups waiting on you. The customary rule is to arrive 20 minutes early to have time to set up, stretch, hit practice balls, etc.
BE READY AT YOUR TURN. When it is time for you to put or take a shot, be ready so you do not hold the line. If there is a group behind you playing at a quicker pace, let them play ahead.
REPAIR BALLMARKS. When the ball leaves an indent in the green, repair it so the root is not compromised. Fix divots and rake sand traps.
TALKING and NOISE. It is impolite to talk while another golfer is setting up his/her shot. There is a reason the announcers are quiet on the course. Same consideration regarding your phone. Do not play music where other people can hear it.
UNSOLICITED ADVICE. Now is not the time to receive or give advice regarding a swing unless there is no one behind you waiting and the advice is requested. Ironically, the golf course is not the place to perfect your swing. Remember, any unsolicited advice is rarely welcome and that goes double on the golf course where players are there to have fun.
PUTTING LINE. Do not move around in someone’s putting sight. This means do not stand behind them and be mindful of your shadow. Your shadow can affect a putter’s vision and distract them.
WALKING ON THE GREEN. Be mindful of other player’s ball-markers so you do not walk in their line. This affects their ball path.
LOST BALL ETIQUETTE. You have 3 minutes to find a lost ball. Watch where your ball goes out of bounds. And if you want to score brownie points with other players, watch when they lose their balls.
PLAYING TOO SLOW. Being ready for your turn is not the only thing necessary to play a proper game of golf. Golf is already a slow game, but some players take an exuberant amount of time to get in their swing. If you want to perfect your swing, do it on the range, not the course. Be sure to get in your cart and go after the ball immediately as well. Being ready at your time to hit is known as “ready golf.”
Being on the phone is distracting and rude. Keep your phone on vibrate, stay off social media, and enjoy your game!
HITTING WHERE OTHERS ARE. Be mindful of your surroundings and always wait if other golfers are in range where you could hit them. Should your ball be headed toward a group, yell, “FORE!” immediately, to give them time to take cover.
CARTS. Be careful driving around the greens so the course stays in good shape. Do not park or drive by the tee box or greens. This is for everyone’s benefit. Follow the cart path. Do not drive on the grass where it says. “No carts beyond this point!” Use the 90-degree rule when in play.
